In the 90s and the early 2000s, the adidas Samba was one of the most popular pairs of sneakers, sought after by all those playing indoor soccer and even those who just wanted to be a part of the “it” fashion at the time. Later, they entered the womenswear market and started coming out in many new colourways. Having been designed a year before the 1950 FIFA World Cup, which was being held in Brazil that year, Dassler decided that the name should have a personal connection to Brazil’s rich traditions, so he named the sneakers after the Brazilian dance and music genre.įrom there, it didn’t take long before the sneakers became a beloved sportswear product. This next part is something that I actually didn’t know before researching this, and that is why the sneakers were named “Samba” in the first place. The gum sole was explicitly used to allow soccer player and athlete alike to play their sport no matter the state of the field, whether hard, soft, dry or icy. The sneakers were initially made in all black, with the brand’s classic three stripes in a contrasting white and the gum sole that we associate with the sneaker. First designed for the sport and specifically for men in 1949, the shoes were designed by the Adidas Founder and namesake, Adolf (Adi) Dassler. Considering these sneakers’ chokehold on modern fashion, it might shock you to learn that the adidas Samba was initially designed to be a soccer shoe (or football for our non-South African friends).
